Default definition of sailing?

I have little experience sailing other than a few times piloting a
dinghy many decades ago. I'm 56, interested enough in learning to
sail "for real" that I've begun following this newsgroup as well as
others. But one thing puzzles me. Despite the name "sailing" in the
newsgroup title I find that I recognize very little in the titles of
the various postings. Clearly the term "sailing" must mean far more
than I had supposed. I confess that I don't bother to read most of
the aforementioned postings, so perhaps I am missing a greater
message. What, for all love, is the idea? No, on second thought,
don't bother to answer. It is merely an observation.

It's usenet. Most everyone here is a sailor, obviously we aren't spending as
much time sailing as we should be. And no, you aren't missing anything by
skipping the majority of the posts. If you come back in the spring you'll
find more sailing content. Some gratuitous sailing content to follow.

i'm sure there is some sound advice on this group.everyone will offer
something different.

personally i learned to sail from a friend on J24's in new york harbor.
light and realitively fast.
then moved up to a pearson 30 of late1970's vintage, which is my current
boat. been sailing for about ten years and every day out is an entirely new
experience, in some way. Start where you can.

how ever you do it........just start.

been thinking about selling for the past three months as i have no time and
she basicly sat at her mooring for more of the summer than a care to think
about...........the thought disappeared yesterday, when after not being
aboard for the last month and a half. a stepped aboard just to make sure
everythiing was ok............and headed out.....cold and glorious
sail........most likely the last sail of the season
it depends on when they haul her out (next week?........yeah it's time)

gf.

Jim,

Keep in mind that it's almost winter time here in the northern hemisphere.

Many active sailors live in northern latitudes and are forced to store their
vessels for the winter. So, they spend a lot of time on the internet in the
meanwhile just shooting the bull with other sailors. Can't really blame them
for that!

Myself, I do not frequent this group all that much anymore. It has become
way to juvenile with the regulars all so predictable and boring. Besides,
I am smart and industrious enough to have placed myself in the position
where I can sail to my heart's content. I live aboard my fine vessel with my
home port in the Florida Keys and sail the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

I've recently returned from a nine-month cruise and my head is screwed on
my shoulders correctly unlike the majority of frustrated and wannabe sailors
who comprise the bulk of this Godforsaken newsgroup.

Respectfully,
Capt. Neal

Thank you who have already answered (despite my request that you not
bother). Perhaps I was being too subtle. I was expressing sarcasm at
the absurd amount of non-sailing junk I see here. Sorry to waken the
trolls, sorry to disturb the rest of you.

We're not????? When did that change happen, Haggy??? Geez, I
knew I'd been away for a long time but I didn't expect to come
back to a change as big as that...ah well, back to the desert
again for another 40 days and nights...
