![]() "SAIL LOCO" wrote in message ... then they take you to your parking place and the power washer crew comes and blasts all the grunge and mussels Because Miskegon Lake os dirty, because we had the hugest algae bloom I've ever seen, and because zebra mussels don't care what they attach to....everyone has them...they are not an exclusive animal... and haulout and storage are GREATLY reduced from the prices ar local marinas...enough that mist members take advantage of the situation,,, off the bottom...the rule is that if you don't work, they don't pull your boat. 1. Why would anyone with a sailboat have grunge and mussels on the bottom? How do they sail? 2. If you have to work is the hull out free? S/V Express 30 "Ringmaster" "Trains are a winter sport" |

to....everyone has them.. Doesn't anyone get under the boat and wipe it off during the season? S/V Express 30 "Ringmaster" "Trains are a winter sport" |

Yes...if the water is warm enough...Lake MI never got much above 65 this
year....i did scrub away a couple of times with the scrub brush as far as I could reach...zebra mussels are not like your ocean mussels...they are very tiny...big ones are not as big as a thumb nail...and they are razor sharp so you have to be very careful of slicing yourself and getting an infection.... I've never seen zebra mussels on a boat that had bottom paint. And I sail on Lake Erie. If you put your hand in the water for ten minutes, you'll have zebra mussels growing on it. We all have bottom paint...we use VC 18 every year...and we all had zebra
mussels....Muskegon Lake is an industrial lake...we've noticed that our bottom paint doesn't;t last as long as it did up at White Lake, which is surprising since there were all those dilute contaminants from the old Hooker plant there and the stuff from the tannery....no we've got a paper mill... Muskegon Chrinicle had an article yesterday about the algae bloom that has
terorized us the past 2 months,....turns out it's the blue green variety and caused by the Zebra mussels...and is quite toxic (monocystins...of the kill your liver type...) They've just put up warnings to not wade, swim, or let your dog go in the water, and to not eat any fish out of Muskegon lake, White Lake or Lake Leelenau, the 3 affected lakes. Of course, we've now had several freeZes and the stuff is dying off...ya think they could have determined this when the stuff was in full bloom???? They've got NOAA, U of M and GVSU all working on the problem.... |

They've got NOAA, U of M and GVSU all working on the problem.... A microbiologist from MSU was on TV today and stated that the fear of the toxins was grossly overstated in that Muskegon Chronicle article. He said you'd probably have to ingest a substantial amount of the actual algal colonies to get enough to make yourself ill. Wading won't do it. Dogs, OTOH, should be kept out of the water, as they tend to drink a lot while swimming. No, Chopper, stay on the dock. Oh wait! You don't have a dock, do ya? :-) Max |

VC18 or VC18 Offshore? The non Offshore has no antifouling properties. S/V Express 30 "Ringmaster" "Trains are a winter sport" |
