OT Australian elections: Howard government returned

....with a significantly increased majority and probable control
of the upper house (senate). Is this a pointer to the outcome in
the US????

Thanks Tad,

It seems the people from "down under" aren't as against us Yankees as Oz
and Nav would like us to believe.

Nice to hear!

Oz,

Stop, take a deep breath, swallow and except the fact the the MAJORITY
has made their decision, 50% of us are going to have to do the same
thing next month. It will be close and don't know yet which 1/2 it will
be.

That is our way! It works! It has for hundreds of years. The majority
rules. There are a lot of minds out there as smart or smarter than you
and I. (Can you believe that?) and they have been right more often than
us. Time to learn what we weren't seeing for the good of all.

Hang on for a few weeks. By then I may be in the same position you are
and we can console one another. Can't change anything so we have to
accept.

If the majority ruled, Al Gore would be POTUS.

Eisboch,

That would be true if the US was a 100% Democracy but it isn't. It is a
Democractic Republic. That is our way.

Interesting eh, the public loved Hawke!

Which no doubt is why he's so unloved by the Labor Party
faithful, despite being the most successful Labor Prime Minister
of the last 60 years. Or perhaps because he was successful? Oz,
you'll be delighted to ahve read (as you must have now), that the
"best" of Adelaide's suburbs, the leafy very affluents, punished
Howard, so Labor won Adelaide and there were signifcant (but not
big enough) swings away from the Government in other seats. Good
news, eh?

Yep, silly *******s.
Just 5 days after the election, suddenly the treasurer is saying that
he thinks the treasury predictions for the economy are optimistic.

Guess he's getting ready to pull out of the promises eh?

You expected everyone to stick to the proposed bribes? Yes Oz,
and no child lives in poverty, either...

Dear oh dear Oz, what you didn't quote from the same newspaper
were the statements that following Mr Latham's "Troops home by
Christmas" on the run policy, Howard had comprehensively defeated
that policy at the start of the election campaign, which is why
it didn't appear in the Labor campaign too! Nor did you quote
that (paraphrased), despite half or more the poluation deciding
in hindsight that the Irag war should not have been entered into,
nevertheless when push comes to shove, the majority trust Howard
to make the right decision...

Dear oh dear Taddy, you still don't see that it was the Howard
interest scare campaign that won for them.
Do you know that in my electorate there was a 3.4% swing to Labour?
The majority here are virtually debt free and cashed up....they didn't
fear interest rate hikes, and instead looked at the real issues...a
budget that was totally unbalanced, health care, schools and foreign
policy. snip

Yes indeed! How dare they be concerned about things that don't
matter like the roof above their head? Those selfish aspirational
voters out in the mortgage belt should go back to packing cases
and stop their stupid attempts to better themselves. They just
don't know their place, do they. They should know that generating
mortgages, overdrafts and other debt is simply not the way to
eventual financial success. Why, if they keep that up, some of
them might end up quite well off in the long run, and come and
live in the eastern suburbs with us who have it all already, but
who of course have never aspired to anything and never used debt
to get to their current blissful well-moneyed state. That really
would lower the tone, wouldn't it.

I guess I'd be giving the great unwashed too much credit to believe

Costello is already softening them up for a rate hike..next review I'd
suspect, and it was coming no matter who was in Govt.

Thing is Taddy, their debt is not being used to better 'themselves'
but to buy the SS commodore instead of the Exec, the Plasma TV and
surround system, the jetski, the 5 star overseas holiday, the cable TV
and the huge fishing boat.

Generating mortgages, overdrafts and other debt is fine if you are
accumulating something that will be worth somethin in the future.

Certainly by "most people" you weren't referring to the French.
