I just finished a great book about the Mir space
station and Nasa's involvement in the program.
I highly recommend it...

Dragonfly: Nasa and the Crisis Aboard Mir
by Bryan Burrough

He's the author of Barbarians at the Gate,
about the RJR Nabisco LBO... also a good book.

here's my summer reading list - I recommend them all highly:
1. Word of Honor by Nelson DeMille (absolutely one of the best books I've
ever read, and very appropriate at this time)
2. Hocus Pocus by Kurt Vonnegut (when is he not great?)
3. The Grapes of Wrath (just keeps getting better and better)

One book that I particularly enjoyed and recommend is the Larry
McMurty book, "Duane's Depressed". It is the third book in the "Last
Picture Show" and "Texasville" storyline. It is a great book for
folks, guys especially, who have reached their 40s or so. I am a big
fan of McMurtry, anyway, and I plan to go visit his bookstore in
Archer City, Texas next month.

Funny--I just picked up a copy last week, but haven't started it yet. I
used to check the NASA spaceflight website for Mir viewing regularly.
Always seemed to give me a sense of insider info to know when and where it
would show up. I do the same now with the ISS, but I do miss Mir.

Max, it's a great book. You'll probably be shocked by what's in it.

Maybe, but I've already read a lot about the problems with Mir on the NASA
website and others. But I've got a novel to finish--then on the this book.

2. Penthouse- I read the letters section while soaking in the tub

My summer list:

Maiden Voyage by Tanya Aebi. It's the story about her growing up while
sailing solo around the world. The quality of the writing is mediocre but I
loved the story and enjoyed it very much.

My Old Man and the Sea by David Hays. The account of a father and son that
sail a small keelboat around Cape Horn together, and about their
relationship. It's a good book, but the style of humor wore on me.

Letters from the Lost Soul by Bob Bitchen. The story of his 5 year cruise
in a large ketch. Quirky but amusing.

The Race by Zimmerman. It's about the non-stop around the world race in
those monster catamarans. I was very bored in the first half of the book.
It went over a lot of history. I was already familiar with most of the
material and the presentation was mediocre at best. Now I'm 3/4 of the way
through it, where the book discusses the race itself. I am enjoying it
more.

Up next: The Long Way by Moitessier. I enjoyed Cape Horn. I enjoyed many
other books about the first around the world alone race. I expect I'll
enjoy this one.

Any of the Garrison novels all of which take place on sailing boats.
Buried At Sea is a good start.
