I thought these might be useful for any future
discussions.

S Starboard tack boat
P Port tack boat
L Leeward boat
W Windward boat
A Boat clear ahead
B Boat clear behind
M Middle or intervening boat
I Inside boat (at mark or obstruction)
O Outside boat (at mark or obstruction)

When combined, the codes work like this:

SL the boat is on starboard tack, and
overlapped to leeward of th eother boat.

PI the boat is on port tack and overlapped
on the inside of the other boat.
