Big dump of snow on Mt Wellington last night, down to 400m. Clear blue
skies, crisp and cool today. Been playing on one of our ships prior to
her heading back into the Southern Ocean.

Bloody bewdyfull !

Yep. Where else on the planet can you have most of the climate zones in
one clean, peaceful country with elbow room to move? Darwin to Hobart,
take your pick.

For all the people in the northern hemisphere - summer (for you)
solstice is over. Your days are getting shorter and soon they'll get
colder. Enjoy.

You need to slow down Taddy, there's roses to smell!

Just so long as they're not at the end of vineyard rows at 7.15
on an icy winter morning with 1600 canes to cut or 50 panels to
prune at $11.30/hr because there's been no work for the last 6

Does OZ have a minimum wage law? Just curious.....And is that rate of 11.30
a typical wage for a field laborer?

Actually Katie, I'd thought the min wage was $11.80/hr as of May this
year...could be mistaken though.

So what would the poverty level wage for a family of 4 be? (This is the
Human Resource manager asking....just making comparisons....)

Way more...the Federal minimum is 5.15/hr. Some states have their own which
always has to be higher than the Fed. We pay our high school wait staff
6.00 to start and 6.50 after 90 days....housekeepers, etc start at 7.50 and
nurse's aides at 10.00....and we are higher than many states.

At our house, it's the same thing. Never know what you can find.

I know there's at least two boats hiding in there somewhere. Last time I went
rummaging in the garage, I found a sander I'd long forgotten I had....

Couldn't tell you without doing some research.
Min wage is IIRC somewhere around $440 and again IIRC unemployment
benefit for a single male is around $230..but I'd have to look it up.

Average weekly wage is $950 in the 12 months to Feb this year, a rise
of 5.3%
http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/s1112140.htm

But the _median_ weekly wage is closer to $600, is my guess. I
note with great interest that the Aust. bureau of Statistics only
mentions median income in relation to census figures, last census
was 2001. On a quick scan in the last several minutes, I am
fascinated to find everyone from the ABS to RUpert Murdoch's
newspapers, and governments in between, dodge any comment on
what the median might be.

Clearly, bloated plutocrats like Oz have not only leveraged way
out the average weekly income, they've hidden their tracks well
while doing so!
