Sunday's Rainy Sail
Cig. butts are nothing but some tobaco fragments and a little paper (wood)
Natural stuff that will decompose and be gone in a week. Some people should give it a rest. S/V Express 30 "Ringmaster" "No shirt, no skirt, full service" |

BC "Bobsprit" wrote in message ... While Scotty tried to fix his outhouse, 6 of us took Alien out for a very nice sail. It was raining or misting or a combo of both for most of the time. The girls stayed dry under the dodger, handed out the hot chocolate and had a good time. It was actually very nice sailing, light but steady air around 8-10 knots. Fog rolled in later and the drizzle started to add some chill, but it was all worth it. There were only about 10 boats out in the area. Visibility was too poor to see if more were sailing. I like the rainy sails because I'm usually less tired than on the days where the sun bakes us. 7 out of 10 stars for a daysail! Some of the boats that were out were interesting...This is at the entrance to Manhasset bay just after setting out.... http://hometown.aol.com/bobsprit/images/arain.jpg RB |

Actually the filter part of cigarrette butts is fiberglass that will not decompose for years, and the "paper" is plasticized to the point where it will also not degrade easily either. ... Some people should give it a rest. Some people (many, actually) should wake up. DSK |
Sunday's Rainy Sail - Butts
"SAIL LOCO" wrote Cig. butts are nothing but some tobaco fragments and a little paper (wood) Natural stuff that will decompose and be gone in a week. ..... Ahhh, if that were only true, but most smokers use filter-tipped cigarettes and those gawd damn filters are forever. So there's the answer - ban the filters! As Loco says, the rest is biodegradable. |

Umm, no. Actually the filter part of cigarrette butts is fiberglass that
will not decompose for years, and the "paper" is plasticized to the point where it will also not degrade easily either. I wasn't including filtered cigs. I agree with the filter problem but if the paper is "plasticized" then why does it burn like paper and not melt and stink like burning plastic. Sorry, that wasn't clear. I meant the part of the paper that's wrapped around the filter. Try burning a cigarette filter some time, if you've got a strong stomach. DSK |

That's just the point Dunall, They don't decompose quickly enough and when they do they release toxins into our waterways. Next tackle will be the banning of plastic shopping bags. Actually, the taxing of plastic shopping bags seems to have worked rather well in Ireland. They almost dissappeared overnight! Regards Donal -- |

Not always true. The cigs I used to smoke would burn if you lit the filter... Maybe it was plastic or paper? Cheers ... Some people should give it a rest. Some people (many, actually) should wake up.
