More miles than Donal!
While Donal didn't sail a lick, we logged an easy 40 miles or so just
daysailing. We sailed most of the way to Oyster Bay, then headed over to Capri for lunch, then sailed under the Whitestone and Throgsneck. Man it got cold! The best part is that this was aboard a friend's Pearson 39, which is obviously also a better boat than Donal's! Remember Donal's rules of build quality...it aint the boat, it's the mileage! RB |

Those miles you've sailed are like counting the miles a Dog gets on a chain running in circles. Not very impressive. OT |

Those miles you've sailed are like counting the miles a Dog gets on a
chain running in circles. Not very impressive. Thom, I'm surprised at you. The level of a sailor is not guaged by how far the boat is sailed. Plenty of people only daysail their boats or do short races. Means nothing, except to Donal. I sail more hours than most boat owners, but that doesn't make me a better sailor either. On the other hand, I think you CAN judge a sailor by the type of boat they've chosen. People with good middle of the road boats (Tartan, Pearson, C&C, Catalina) are often friendly folks, while people with crappy boats are angry and bitter. I think boat Scotty Potti and Donal fit this profile nicely. Buyer's remorse can poison the soul (Floors for Scotty). RB |

You're Rigth, Nutsy;
A sailor can be rated by the kind of boat he sail and how he sails it. A boat in the thirty foot range, with full cruising set-up. Cabin, galley, bunks, head, really isn't a day sailer. It does make you wonder what kind a person that does that kind of sailing, considers themselves sailors and has the right to rate other sailors. They are certainly over boated. An O-day Day Sailer and a take out order from McDonalds would answer 95% of your sailing needs.... maybe you might make that 100%. You don't need a Tartan to enjoy an evening sail. Ole Thom |

A boat in the thirty foot range, with full cruising set-up. Cabin,
galley, bunks, head, really isn't a day sailer. Sure it is, Thom. We day sailed today. Suzanne is just over 5 months pregnant and she was able to go below and take a cat nap while I enjoyed the freshening breeze. When we returned we enjoyed some other below decks fun. We use the cabin and even more so on our weekend trips. It's up to us how we use her, but most importantly, Alien is sailed several times a week while most boats just sit, or like Scotty Potti's boat, miss some of the best wind of the year. A boats accomodations offers chances at longer trips, but it's not mandatory. We slept aboard plenty last year. RB RB |

what kind a person that does that kind of sailing, considers themselves sailors and has the right to rate other sailors. No, Thom. It makes YOU wonder. I'm too busy day sailing to worry about "how" people use their stoves and bunks! I just got back from a wonderful few hours of sailing. I did not make for Europe, nor even enter NY harbor...and yet we had a great time tacking back and forth close to home and enjoying the day! RB |

How many "stepping stones" have you had (I almost slipped up by saying
"owned") in the last 5 years?? But unlike you I enjoyed them and each fit my quickly changing lifestyle. When I started I had no money and wasn;t sure if sailing would fit in. The Pearson was a boat I could afford, and was not oversized for my needs. The C&C was a lucky break...a chance to own a better boat for virtually nothing while I planned for a much bigger boat. Now with a baby on the way, the bigger, faster C&C will also fit in. I still miss that old little Catalina at times. And I made money on every boat I've owned and gained tremendous experience that you missed. RB |

Nutsy,
Yes,it does make me wonder. If you are so busy, why do you spend so much time ranting about other peoples boats. Enjoy what you have. Being jealous of people with newer boat really doesn't make sense. It sure as hell doesn't upgrade "Derelict" Seems to me you are trying to prove something to yourself. You must know, after all this time, you haven't proved anything to anyone else. You don't have to reply. Go sailing. How is Susy holding up? Hope it doesn't get to hot this summer for her. Do you have AC in the Apt.? Give her my best. She & you are both in my prays every Nite. Hope you don't mind Ole Thom |

That's too bad. I was sailing today and this newsgroup of mostly virtual sailors never entered my thoughts. I be sailing again today so I can set up my jiff reefing for the season. Oh, I know....sailing a short distance to set up the reefing isn't "really" sailing at all and reduces the build quality of my C&C! RB |
More miles than Donal!
Nutsy,
Jiff Reefing is best set-up at the dock. Me thinks, just maybe, you're getting "Loose with the truth " again. OT P/S The same topic, day after day is a RANT. |

The Pearson was a boat I could afford, Sadly, I believe you..... and was not oversized for my needs. You've put on some weight since then. The C&C was a lucky break... I thought that it only became available due to the ill health, and subsequent death, of the precious owner! a chance to own a better boat for virtually nothing while I planned for a much bigger boat.
