Damn It's Cold,

Temps in the Teens for the last three days and a forecast of snow for
tonight!

I hope we don't lose power! I've got the Electric heater in the cabin
and two hundred watt lights in the engine compartments of the boat.

So much for winter sailing in the Northwest!! Having a tough run of
weather so far. There is some warming forcasted but with it Freezing
Rain. That will sure as hell create a power outage. Hope not. If it
happens I'll have to move aboard and run the engines to prevent freeze
up. Always afraid of Carbon Monoxide when I have to do that in the slip.

flew into tahoe and stayed at the peppermill casino. had or rented SUV
stolen from the parking attentents at the casino. They had a film of a
kid reaching into the attentants booth and snagging our keys, the
casino felt so bad about it the comped our whole stay in a 2000 + foot
room with waterfalls and a fully stocked 20 foot bar, also they rented
us another SUV for our stay. Were do you go in the sierras? One of my
favorite places on earth. Beautiful indeed. If you never been to lake
topaz you need to go, Its right on the border and has some awesome off
road trails on the right side of the road 1/2 mile before the border
to California. Go from 12000 ft above sea level to 15000 feet on the
trail and some awesome views!

I've never been. I tried to Mapquest it, but it just shows
the town of Lake Topaz which is in the middle of NV...
can't be right. I'd like more info if you don't mind.

We typically go, coincidentally, near Nevada City. I had
part interest in a gold mine on the Yuba river. Its nearly
impossible to get to a reasonable place to park for the
hike in in the winter, due to the heavy snow. This time,
we could only get to the main access road. From there,
you can see the Malakoff Diggings, which is pretty cool,
and most of the south fork valley.

Have an alarm, Nutsy. When you run at the dock the last place to see a
CO problem is in the Cabin, The exhaust has already create a envelope of
CO around the outside of the boat. Bad if the air is still.

Just outside of Wellington. My uncle Art had a cabin there. He was the
Capt. of exxons largest supertanker. Its the sort of place you dream
of when you say your going to put a paddle over your arm walk inland
and settle were someone ask you what is that?

The problem you had was the maps call it topaz lake, not lake topaz.

There is no place on earth more beautiful. The lake topaz lodge and
casino is a family run place full of people you will never forget. If
you ever get there ask for Poopsie to deal your cards. She's a hoot!

The last link I posted show a picture of the casino Lodge sign. If you
look at the right side of the road pass the lodge you will see a
moutian, just 1/4 mile pass the lodge on the right is the ol gold
hunters mule trails that go over the moutian to california. You will
need a very good 4W drive to get up it. But were the trail cuts back
to the right just before the stream you have to cross if you look up
to your left you will see some very green rock outcroppings, if you
dig a little I guarentee you will find some gold, we did. Last time we
went up it had to drive over a big tree that was over the trail
because of a snow slide. Used the brand spankin new toyota 4 runner
that the peppermill rented for us. Did not have a problem going up
over it, but on the way down one of the limbs of the tree put a crease
in the side of the 4 runner that was about 4 foot long(opps) good
thing the casino had full insurance on it ;0). Half way up the
mountian you will see a Danger sign, just ignore it you can go a few
more miles before the trail gets so narrow only a mule or a person on
foot can pass, but beware you will have to back down for a 1/2 mile of
so, no room to turn around, and cliffs that are over 400-500 ft sheer
drop offs.

Four days and it hasn't gotten above freezing.

The weatherman got everything right except the temperature. We've had 6
inches of snow and so far, 5 hours of freezing rain. The whole of
Washington State is a damn skating rink.

I sure hope we don't lose power. My boat is only a mile and a half from
my house but I'm on a four hundred foot hill and I know I can't get to
it.

I just telephoned a live aboard ten boats down from mine. He has a key
to my boat and he said it looks OK. He said he found my "Heat Pal" and
he'll fire it up if the power goes off.

This is the worst cold spell we've had since 1996. I'm kind of sorry I
put "Pneuma" back in the water last Labor Day, when she was out for her
bottom job. Oh well, It is supposed to warm up tomorrow. Hope so!

Yeah, I know Katy,

It just that we aren't use to it!

Every once in awhile ole Mother Nature hangs one on us. Five days below
freezing is some thing we aren't ready for.
We leave our boats in the water year 'round. I'm usually out sailing
until the the second or third week in Jan. Then I put the cover on the
boat until the third or fourth week in Feb. The boating season starts
with the "Ides of March" Regatta. There is a "Frost Bite" seris of three
race in Feb.

My winter sailing dress is a Peter Storm sweater and skii cap

As I said, the last winter to match this one was 1996. That was the
winter my wife died. My mind wasn't to concerned with sailing then

But, you're right. I'm turning into a whiner in my old age. Forgive me?

You're quite right. It rained for 3 hours this morning and the
temperature was down to 12C. That was our bad weather. Now it's sunny,
15 knots of wind and 21C. Think I'll go play on the water.

Ah Yes,

10:00AM, Temp 40 Degrees F, Snow and Ice melting so fast it sounds like
some one left the hose on

Heading down to the boat, in about an hour, to reduce the heat ( get it
back on thermostat control) Made it thur OK.

Could be sailing this Week-end. Yeah!!
