Andersen Winches

I am in the market for new winches and I have been told to look at Andersen.
I have used Lewmar in the past and have been very satisfied but the MO on
Lewmar is that they aren't what they used to be especially on the service/parts
end.

I would appreciate any input on Andersen or Lewmar.

Thanks,

Ray

Andersen Winches

I have been using the stainless Andersen's in different sizes for
years, and have never experienced any problems (as I have with some
other well known brands).
I don't claim to be the ultimate oracle on the subject, but as far as
I am concerned the Andersen winches are second to none for any boat
where weight is not absolutely crucial. The Lewmar "racing-line" are
lighter (but the "ocean-line" are not).
I think that the chafe on the sheets are less with Andersen's, as they
claim, but I'm not quite sure, since so many other factors will
influence the life-length of the sheets.

For any cruiser, cruiser/racer or racer/cruiser Andersen full
stainless self-tailors would be my first choice, though I'm not
religious about it. Most major brands work well, if well maintained.

I have replaced many winches for clients over the years so i have seen the
results of hard use and got feedback from the people about thier choice of
replacments..

My first choice would be older lewmar refurbished with new
bushes/bearings/pawls etc
second choice would be new andersen.
Later lewmar are very poor compared to the earlier ones... (unless wieght is
a priority)
