Default Satellite Radio Usage / Signal Availability

Hello friends. There is a month on / month off sailor on the
Christmas list and I was thinking about getting him a satellite radio
system. I'm curious if anyone can validate if the signal for Sirius
or Radio XM is good in his general cruising area; up and down the
coast of Florida, into the Bahamas and eventually to the Carribean.
I'd hate to buy the device only to find that he cannot use it where he
is sailing.

Thanks.

It is only good for the near Bahamas. Anything more than
about 200 miles offshore and the signal fades out. It
is useless in the Caribbean.

Thanks, Simon. BTW - do you know if that is for both XM and Sirius?
I remember reading that XM used localized, ground based redirectors to
send the signal while the Sirius signal came in directly from the
satellites. (?) Anyways, Bahamas is good enough for me. Thanks a
lot.

Here's a good link that shows XM coverage. I don't know about
Sirius other than it's liable to go out of business if it doesn't
start getting more subscribers.
