Losing the Battle
Through a series of rogue waves, bad tactics and bad weather, a storm is blowing you ashore. There is sand. There are rocks. Engine is dead. There's no time to get you tattered sails into something resembling an effective foil. Behind you, your Zodiac dinghy is doing a dance, but it's still there at the end of the tow line. Forget how or why. You're IN THIS SITUATION. You're expecting to run aground anytime.... What do you do? Abandon her? Try to ride her into soft sand? Drop the hook and prey? Not a quiz. Interested in hearing thoughts on this. Capt RB |

Drop the anchor immediately and start work on plan B.

Anchor, if there's enough room to make this feasible, otherwise run up on sand.
If you anchor, even if it is marginal holding, it buys time to come up with a more proper solution. Running up on the beach may seem attractive, but more often then not the boat is lost. Abandoning the vessel is giving up on it, and there's no guarantee the dink is any safer. "Bobsprit" wrote in message ... Drop the hook. Start thinking, the passengers job is to pray.

I wouldn't recommend getting off the boat in the conditions he described.
It's safer on the boat. I would put everything I could as far as anchor goes in the water, get some sail up.. something is better than nothing, hand off the helm to someone else, and get the engine going if possible.. If it just wasn't going to work, and we were losing ground, I'd try and head for the sand, with the idea of running it up as far as possible. Screw the boat at this point, it's the people stupid. :-) "Joe" wrote in message om... (Bobsprit) wrote in message ... Bwaaahahahahahahahaaa! Now that I'd like to see! Hey, Ozzy....6 years ago I used a Dinghy with a 4 hp to tow a 27 foot sailboat off a dock that was on fire. The coast guard ordered me to stop the effort to rescue the boat and I ignored them. I have pics of the huge fire taken afterwards. RB |

RB Yep, but that wasn't in the middle of a storm on a lee shore Nope, but the point is that in less than 10 knots on the boat's beam, it was VERY hard to get her off the pilings. In a storm it just wouldn't happen, noway, nowhow, even with a 9.9hp. RB |

Hey, that saved my buddy's J27 two years ago.
RB Was he "power gybing"? Actually, he was close to his mooring field when a T-Storm came along. He got slammed and managed to grab a mooring (not his) which probably saved him from becoming "one" with another boat. RB |

becoming "one" with another boat.
RB So your friends are incompetant too? Actually, my friend is a "famous" J27 sailor, who's well known. He lurks here from time to time. He's yet to damage a boat in 32 years of racing and winning. RB |

Ha, I've even been known to run aft while trying to hold on to get it to
a suitable cleat! Of course I didn't have fenders to fall over! Dunno, the one where he was out of control in a storm heading toward
another boat that he would not have been able to avoid without grabbing the mooring! Never said anything of the sort. I simply said he got slammed and grabbed a mooring. I can't seem to locate what windspeed equals "slammed." RB |

Do you think Booby was recounting his friend's story when he claimed a
similar escapade? In other words he was lying again? Nope, in our case we were getting the catalina off the dock and tried to grab our mooring. Heavy wind caught us before we got the rode up and over. Two different situations. He was successful. We weren't. RB |
Losing the Battle
You said he grabbed a mooring which saved him from becoming one with
another boat! Yup, moments later the wind was up around 70 knots. Only lasted 15-20 minutes, but he'd have been in trouble. Catching the mooring was a good decision. RB |
