Losing the Battle

Through a series of rogue waves, bad tactics and bad weather, a storm is
blowing you ashore. There is sand. There are rocks. Engine is dead. There's no
time to get you tattered sails into something resembling an effective foil.
Behind you, your Zodiac dinghy is doing a dance, but it's still there at the
end of the tow line.
Forget how or why. You're IN THIS SITUATION. You're expecting to run aground
anytime....

What do you do? Abandon her? Try to ride her into soft sand? Drop the hook and
prey?

Not a quiz. Interested in hearing thoughts on this.

Anchor, if there's enough room to make this feasible, otherwise run up on sand.

If you anchor, even if it is marginal holding, it buys time to come up with a
more proper solution. Running up on the beach may seem attractive, but more
often then not the boat is lost. Abandoning the vessel is giving up on it, and
there's no guarantee the dink is any safer.

I wouldn't recommend getting off the boat in the conditions he described.
It's safer on the boat. I would put everything I could as far as anchor goes
in the water, get some sail up.. something is better than nothing, hand off
the helm to someone else, and get the engine going if possible.. If it just
wasn't going to work, and we were losing ground, I'd try and head for
the sand, with the idea of running it up as far as possible. Screw the boat
at this point, it's the people stupid. :-)

Hey, Ozzy....6 years ago I used a Dinghy with a 4 hp to tow a 27 foot sailboat
off a dock that was on fire. The coast guard ordered me to stop the effort to
rescue the boat and I ignored them. I have pics of the huge fire taken
afterwards.

Yep, but that wasn't in the middle of a storm on a lee shore

Nope, but the point is that in less than 10 knots on the boat's beam, it was
VERY hard to get her off the pilings. In a storm it just wouldn't happen,
noway, nowhow, even with a 9.9hp.

Actually, he was close to his mooring field when a T-Storm came along. He got

I know a man of your experience has never missed picking up a mooring

BUT, I have got it wrong and know just how difficult it is just to
hold on..if you're silly enough to try..with any way on at all.

Nope, in our case we were getting the catalina off the dock and tried to grab

different situations. He was successful. We weren't.

Yup, moments later the wind was up around 70 knots. Only lasted 15-20 minutes,
