performance question

That's not much sail. Such a boat would be very slow
except in strong winds.

If a sailboat weighed 4960 pounds, and had a sail area of 120 square feet, would
it be fast or slow? Would it be considered over-canvased, or woefully
under-canvased? Are there any boats made that roughly fit this configuration?
Are they high performance boats?

As a first order calculation, one can assume the wetted area goes as the
2/3 power of the displacement volume (D). (D is weight in pounds
divided by 64). It is the friction of this wetted area that the sail
must compensate for. Thus on a racing yacht we might have A/D^2/3 ~ 22,
a cruiser ~12. You boat would be ~7 and very slow except in high winds.
These figues can be adjusted for form by the designer.

Bill is refering to the original design of the Coronado 27 before neal added
his 452% genoa.

This would have a SA/Disp ratio of under 7. There are only a handful of vessels even
close to being this under-canvassed - most of them motorsailors or other specialty boats.

performance question

Actually, I'm referring to the sluggish C&C 32.

The difference between my C&C 27-5 and Suzanne's C&C 32...

C&C 27 MK 5 Low PHRF....180
C&C 32 low PHRF....150

But thanks for the birthday wish!
Say, Bill...off topic and character for a moment, do you think a "new" C&C
meeting on the LIS would generate some interest? I've spoken to a few 30 and 33
owners who wonder why we don't have a meeting locally.

When does Suzzy get her new boat?

There is already a big C&C event every summer on the LIS. I guess you just
don't
get invited.

Don't you read? I said "new" meeting.

Good luck trying to keep up with me with your handicap of 4960 extra

pounds with
only 120 square feet of sail to propell it!!!

But thanks for the birthday wish!
