Jon Ganz was seen standing on the dock of hos sailing school with a =
megaphone in his hand. He raised it to his mouth and called out: You =
there in Number 99. Your time is up and you must come in. After a =
little while, with no response from the boat, Jon again raised the =
megaphone to his lips and hollered: Boat number 99, you are now past =
due on your ental time. Please sail your boat back to the dock. =
Another 15 minutes ensued and Jon was about to raise the megaphone once =
more to his mouth when a fellow employee came over and asked what he was =
doing. Jon explained that Number 99 was not paying attention and =
wouldnot return to the dock. The fellow employee looked out, grabbed =
the megaphone from Jon and yelled: Hey, Number 66, you got a problem =
out there?

Sort of reminds me of a scuba trip in Mexico. It was a guided tour
of a particularly nice reef. The guide, being quite responsible, went
around to all the divers asking for an accounting of their remaining
air. People would hold up five or six or seven fingers, or whatever
they had remaining in 100 lbs in the tank. He got to me. I checked
and had eight hundred left. Instead of holding up eight fingers, I put
my index finger and thumb together on each hand and put them
together where the fingers meet... sort of forming an eight. He just
shook his head and swam away. I guess he figured that 40 feet
just wasn't quite deep enough for nitrogen narcossis. I felt particularly
stupid.

Sheesh . . didn't we do this thread a couple of years ago. I think a couple
of our intellectual wannabes got into it over how base eight works. Or was
it over something else? Always something.

Let's see . . .if a 60,000 ton dwt freighter with crew of 31 and with
100,000 imperial gallons of fuel travels 12,396 nautical miles against an
average head current of 1/2 knot and burns approximately 500 liters of fuel
per hour at an average speed of 22.4 (GPS) leaving Hong Kong and traveling
westerly to Quebec what time, adjusted for zones did they leave if it took
them 27 days to transit the Panama Canal? Bonus Question when did the
lettuce and icecream run out? Give answer in base eight of course.

The generators on most ships burn that much alongside the dock.

Trust Jon to always get the base eight questions answered correctly. Anyone
know why?
