I have new sunbrella sailcover and pedestal covers for the C&C 32. Can they be
machine washed or should I just rinse them off and dry?
This may be common knowledge, like grey water, but please answer anyway so I
can be a better sailor!

Thanks,

Capt RB

My recollection is that you shouldn't put them in a washer.
I'd wash with soap and rince them just to be safe.

No way John, you should put them in an industrial washer with 5 lbs of
pebbles and
2 quarts of bleach for 4 hours, gives them that well used "sailorly"
look.
! I can't believe you're giving this dork a serious answer.

My wife washed our Sunbrella cockpit cushion covers in the washer with
Woolite and cold water. Came out beautiful.

Ah... Woolite. Never thought of that. I was thinking regular
laundry soap.

You can machine wash sunbrella with a gentle soap, in the permanent =
press cycle...then spray with a water repellant product...I wouldn't put =
them in the dryer, though...

I know your question was a "how to", but really, why bother?
A few points to consider:
Mine are blue, and while they do receive a bit of dirt and bird droppings,
the amount does stablize.
The sun and rain cleans them good enough for me, after all the purpose is to
protect what is underneath.
The bird doo doo cleans up completely by itself and all that is left is a
bit of black on the sail cover from air pollution.
The seams in my sail cover are starting to give. The thread used to sew it
together is not as UV resistant as the cloth.
If your covers are old like mine, you may also run the risk of having them
come apart if you put them in a washing machine.
In any event, machine washing will speed the demise of most fabrics.
The choice is a trade off.of appearance verses function in this case.
(I do advocate washing one's clothing :)

Some people are more concerned with how their boat looks, in the slip, than
sailing them.

By choosing your current vessel it's plain to see that you were concerned with
neither.
Oh...and you're an A-hole to boot!

We call these pretenders, 'slip Queens'. They load up their boat with all
kinds of uneeded electronic gear, brag about owning the latest & greatest
'stuff', spend more time cleaning and polishing than sailing. Some do
nothing more then an occasional daysail just to show off their toys.

I'm sure you call them "queens." Wishful thinking on your part.

I washed my sailcover on a gentle cycle with regular laun soap. I then dried
on a gentle cycle and applied two coats of waterproofing that I got in the
camping dept at Wal-Mart. Worked great!

Hey, BillyJane, sails aren't made out of Sunbrella last

Unfortunately, you now have less UV protection than before you washed them.
Probably not a big deal on cushions, but ruinous for sails.

Real sails - not those obscene roll-ups! Only a wannabe
or a know-nothing would even own such compromise sails.

Uh, Billy Boy Blue, the purpose of sails is to have then
bent on so they can power the vessel around. I guess
you're like Booby who sails with the wind-up head
sail partially unwound with the motor running and the
mainsail cover along with the compass and instrument
covers on but the radar screen (inside the cabin where
it does no good) on.

Talk about messed up piorities . . .

S.Simon - sails should spend more time up and drawing
than covered.

Sail covers, dimwit. Washing sailcovers reduces their ability to protect the
sails from UV.
