SSB recommendation for weather data and email

Hello all,

I hope not to bore fellow sailors to death, but since now I haven't
found a recent answer to the following question, I simple fire away:

We are planning to cross the Atlantic in a 40' Obviously the reception
of weatherdata is of utmost importance. Somebody mentioned SSB with
additional email facility (very handy) and to receive such weather
data. The brand name ICOM 600 was uttered - together with a PC laptop
software called 'Herbie' (...?...).

We are not interested in fancy equipment - possibly anything that is
used but reliable and does the job is fine for us.

At moment the old lady is equipped with a standard VHS.

What would you people suggest ?
bests Lars

I don't think "Herbie" is a piece of software, actually he's a nice
fellow that lives near Toronto and provide weather forecasts for sailors
in the Atlantic. You contact him via SSB, give your daily position and
sailing plan and he provides you with a daily forecast and possibly
suggests routes to follow to avoid nasty stuff coming your way.

Cheers
Marty
