The batteries, Bob. Tell us about the batteries.
Did you lose them, or did you forget to buy them? Both. And yet there were "new" batteries on board of such a cheap variety that the GPS would only last 30 minutes w/light on a set. They were Panasonics, 4 for a dollar! RB |

Uh-huh. So..., how many amps does this GPS draw? I thought I'd throw it overboard because with it's light on it was eating batteries. But it was clearly the batteries themselves. I grabbed a half dead pair of Energizers from my spare GPS (A very old Garmin 38) and they powered the Garmin Map76 for the rest of the trip. RB |

have you completely lost your ability to troll???
Flip flop, flip flop, flip flop...the sound of Mooron on deck...and then he asks..."have you completely lost your ability to troll???" Maybe! Maybe not! RB |

Time of HW at Port Jefferson on the night that you entered???? I wonder what Donal would do with the answer? RB |
Holy Backpedal, Batgirl!!!!!
Since Booby seems unable to answer this basic question, I'll do my best with the limited
info and resources I have at hand. I believe the time of ALien's entrance was 2AM on Saturday, August 23. Low water was 35 minutes later, at 2:35AM. I think the current corresponds closely to the tide height here, so ALien entered at the end of the Ebb. Had she entered as had been planned, at 1:30, it would have been more than an hour before low. I don't know how strong the current was that day, or the profile of the current at that site, but the Ebb could have been as strong as 1.5 knots in the channel. Had they arrived 45 minutes earlier than planned they might have had a 2.5 knot ebb. Booby also doesn't recall the wind direction - had it been strong from the NW this would have been a very sloppy endeavor. I find it very disappointing that these basic parameters were not worked out in advance, and etched well into RB's memory. Bobsprit wrote: You seem to have it straight. What would you like to know? If they had arrived 2 hours earlier then the current flowing out of the harbour would have been at it's maximum. So, Bob might be just pretending to know nothing about navigation. Regards Donal -- |

I'll never understand why people can't just enjoy something and not try to unwind it. Avoiding the max current was a good idea though, we should have waited another hour, but I was sleepy! RB |

Are you now saying that you planned your entry to coincide with slack water? No friggin way and you'll not make that stick! We cooked steak and fish and THAT determined the length of our wait. RB |

I've never seen you respond like that before! We cooked steak and fish and THAT determined the length of our wait. 8 minutes, huh? ... I don't think so!!! You were scared to enter P. Jeff at half tide. I don't blame you. As a complete beginner, you probably didn't understand that it was NEAPS!! The flow was probably only about 1.25kts. Yes, Bob "One and a quarter knots". In other words - "sod all" current, and a very easy entrance. By waiting for slack water, you demonstrated admirable caution in the face of unchallenging circumstances. Trans(for Oz).... "Chicken"! Bwaaak, Bwaaaak, Bwaaaak! Regards Donal -- |
Holy Backpedal, Batgirl!!!!!
You give boobie far too much credit - I think he was totally oblivious to the state of the
tide or the possibility of current. Even though it was neaps, with a max ebb of 2.6, they might have had 2.0 knots. But the real issue would have been the wind - if it was strong NW it would have been a problem. RB still hasn't mentioned the wind direction. Donal wrote: You were scared to enter P. There's a channel heer where sometimes it's safer to go thru backwards
using the engine to push against the rip and provide steerage as you That's nothing, near Whitestone, there's an entrance into a small marina where you have to yodel to get through. Doesn't make much sense, but you have to do it. RB |
