that predate Chrétien by several hundred years, and he's mentioned in
passing in Y Gododdin, which is probably about 6th century AD.

Yes, but the semi-historical/legendary Arthur has been superseded for
everybody but a few scholars by the fictional French fellow. Not much
but the name and association with Britain remained.

Umm, NO he wasn't. The story of Arthur did migrate to France and come back
to Britan with changes but the original archetype was from Britan and many
DO say Wales.
