Express 30 vs. J30
 
Now if I wanted to race AND do a bit of cruising, would I get an Express 30 or
J30?

Build quality-Both pretty good
Looks-Both are odd somewhat "off" looking boats.
Performance-Both are very quick boats and pretty comparable.
Interior....This is where the boats are set firmly apart. The Express 30
interior is barely serviceable. Now let's look at the J-30 interior.

WOW! Not bad for a boat that kicks ass! I can't find a single pic of the
Express 30 that looks good. Oh well!

LOL........................... Everyone can see you keep comparing a photo of
the Express salon taken from the middle of the boat using a normal lens to
photos of other boat's interiors taken from the companion way with a wide angle
lens. Except for the Js 1 foot wider beam (at deck level) I don't think you
can name anything that makes it's interior any more "serviceable" Hell, the J
doesn't have an oven. Who would go cruising without an oven. Address that one
who knows nothing about boats. Your busted.

Except for the Js 1 foot wider beam (at deck level) I don't think you
can name anything that makes it's interior any more "serviceable"

One foot wider beam does add quite a bit of volume. YOU know nothing about
boats!

the miserable Express 30 cabin livable?

Come on Bob...you are like one of those poor Walter Mitty types
comparing 0-60 speeds in the car enthusiasts magazines, knowing full
well that you will spend your life stuck in traffic in a Taurus.
Rarely do you seem to even have both sails up. Why worry about
racing? At least Catalina owners, who seem to spend their lives with
"two foot itis" know they are buying dockominiums.

People should buy boats for the sailing they actually do. You would
be amazed at the number of Valiants sitting in slips on my LAKE. A
couple of weeks ago, I was sailing along and saw a new Catalina 32
with a radar and a wind generator!:) Marketing combined with
fantasies are a powerful force.

Of course I know you are just trolling:) Maybe you should consider a
bass boat for your next "step up":)

LOL..... You dufas. I told you that the extra foot is at deck level which I
guess would give you more room to sway your head back and forth to music. The
J has LESS beam at the waterline which is where you get "room" dummy. You know
nothing about boats.
I've told you before the J30 is underpowered and that unballanced rudder
makes it drive like a school bus. Also when the wind is blowing over 20 you
need a gorilla to stear the thing. It's a fine one design however and a fun
class to be in if you don't mind spending money to go slow but stay ahead of
other slow 30 footers. Since it's the only performance boat you claim to have
ever sailed on I assume that's why you think it's a screamer. Now go cut down
that ugly stupid looking stern ladder.

I am impressed. People are using photographs to determine the
wonderfulness of boats.
wow!

If you are cruising these two wonderful rocketships, which one is easier
for a couple to handle, with two athletic adult friends? which one is
easier for the couple with two kids or no one else on board?
which one draws more water? (I assume that you experts understand that
term!)
My wife and I cruised a J-30 for a few weeks. Did lots of things well
but not everything. The 5'6" cook had trouble cooking because the stove
was located in a section of the boat with adequate headroom. the cockpit
is great for not getting bruised but not for casual reading in the sun
when reaching along the south shore of Cape Cod.
My friends with the Express 30 claimed that towing their inflatable, in
any configuration, even with the bow pulled up the transom, just kills
their speed. they say they can really feel the difference with the boat
loaded for a weekend of cruising versus the boat in racing trim. they
said that the cruising weight seemed more noticeable than the weight of
the racing crew.
but both couples loved their boats.

You'll have to make a few interior mods to have a place to put an oven on a
J30. That might just add a few dollars to your estimate.

I go sailing instead of hanging at the dock to take pictures of my boat to
post on the internet. As far as I've seen the Express 30s interior is about
the same as any other 30 footer from the mid eighties. In the late 80s
builders started moving the head aft ala the French boats and the C&C 30mk11
which made for a nicer head. I opted not to spend $40K more to go slower but
have more room to take a dump.
Face it. Your just jealous because the Express 30 was designed by a real
designer and your 70s tub was designed by an in house employee which was done
to save money. To put that into a perspective that you will understand that's
the equivalent of private label in house speakers and you know how crappy they
are. Get lost........... you know nothing about boats.

You also can't take a leak while standing up in a J30.
You failed to mention what Express 30 your friends were sailing.
As far as your questions go I would assume since you have friends with one you
know what the draft is. As far as sailing with a couple etc. I singlehand my
Express 30 quite a bit. It's east to trim both the main and the jib from the
helm. By the way I don't have roller furling, lazy jacks etc.
