Explain It to Neal

This is a new sailing education series for the boat experts in Alt.Sailing.Asa.

Why does a J24, with less WL beat Neal's Coronado 27 10 out of 10 times?
We know he's claimed he's passed J24s, but those were anchored.
Anyone care to break it down for him?

Capt RB

Facts speak more loudly than speculation.

Come down to the J-24 races on Biscayne Bay
sometime and watch how my Coronado 27
leaves them behind on the downwind leg. This
is even when I'm towing my Dyer Dhow.

They probably weren't there the same years I was.
I don't lie. I don't have to lie. I've outdistanced
J24s while they were racing and I was just cruising.

That's no lie. I started even with them up the Bay and
was ahead of everyone of them at the Featherbed
Bank.

Columbus Day Regatta?

Probably so, since one of them has won it a couple of times.

And since I have actually sailed with them, I know they aren't liars. You?

Tell us, O Crapton, why it is that you have only fanciful claims & empty bragging?

Most of the rest of us enjoy discussing sailing. Why are you here?

I don't lie. I don't have to lie.

Low grade fertilizer.

In light air when using your motor... maybe.

I could ask you why you are here but I know so I won't.

You are here because you and your trawler aren't even
welcome in rec.boats. Ha ahh h ahahhahahahhahahahah!

Gosh, Beaver!

Didn't I say it was a downwind run? Since when
is the last time you saw racers going around marks
on a downwind run?

I can accept that,
They haveto go around marks, you just go point to point.

Golly Cappy I see you've never heard the tern "Gybe mark"
nor "Wing Mark"

I can understand that.

Did I say 'equilateral' triangle? I think not! So,
there's nothing to stew about.

I'm gonna let you stew in that for a little while.

They use a triangle race course around here almost
exclusively. The leeward mark is the end of the downwind
run. Courses are laid out so as to place the leeward mark
as dead downwind as possible. You start out the course
on a beat, then you reach then you run and then you beat
and then your done.

I know how it works but I still think it is stupid compared
to cruising where you do all those things but you do it for
a purpose other than to see who can strut around at the
after-race beer bash.

Neither do you, but you know how to forge, don't you?

Well, in the loosest possible sense of the word..
