Sustained Transmission Operation in Reverse

I have an older Yanmar with a reduction drive transmission. The reduction
ratio seems to be the same in forward gear as in reverse. The boat is
equipped with a right hand prop. Would installing a left hand prop hurt the
transmission? I suspect that it is probably bad for some reason, but does
anyone know for sure?

Check with the manufacturer of your particular "reverse gear". In some cases
that I am familiar with, this would be no problem, but a question comes to mind
...... why would you want to change to a left hand prop?

I remember a review (maybe by Pascoe?) of a Far East built trawler where they reversed one
propeller by running in reverse. Unfortunately, the transmission was not "symmetrical"
and burned out quickly from running in reverse all the time. This was with much more
power than you're talking about, but you should make sure the reverse is made for
continuous duty.

Available used folding prop that is left handed.
I would like to see how much difference a folding prop makes without
spending the big bucks on a new one.
