It sounds exactly like the conditions that we had just over a week ago.
The wind varied between 20 - 35 kts. At one point the wind didn't drop
below 32 kts for over 10 minutes. WE put a reef in then. We beam reached
all afternoon and let the tide carry us home (instead of gybing downwind).
It was the best sail so far this year. There were hundreds of boats out
there, and they seemed to be enjoying themselves. I don't believe that
anybody hit any rocks, although I suspect that a few people probably banged
their pontoon. A few people commented on the excellent wind - nobody talked
about a storm.

When you say "storm" do you mean that it was raining, or are you referring
to the wind?

To be honest, the slips are well protected, even in a very windy day. It's
rarely a problem coming in. Somedays I do it better than others, but I've yet
to have a mishap.

Well protected slips are nice, indeed I haven't had that luxury for
a while, although at least my slip is head to wind more often than
not. My only fiascos have been when I am sailing very short handed
(one non-sailor as crew). That coupled with the fact that my boat has
an offset prop shaft has created some moments of stress for me and
entertainment for onlookers I have a whole dock box full of old
firehose that I have been meaning to install in my slip to help
protect my topsides, but I haven't gotten around to it as yet.
Handling the boat under power with an offset propshaft is a dream once
you get some way on, but until then it is a bit different to say the
least.

My only fiascos have been when I am sailing very short handed
(one non-sailor as crew).

My biggest mistake was taking the slip under genoa in the Pearson one day. I
really had it all under control as I made the turn into the slip. At that
moment one of the girls flashed us and I missed the slip, banging into a
finger. No damage done...except to my ego!

Docking under sail is always impressive when done correctly and only
happens when no one is around to witness it As I learned to sail on
a small scow, usually singlehanded, it was part of a day's sail to
bring the boat back and time everything just right or else...bad
things were sure to follow I sailed a friend's Flying Scot this
past weekend and got to practice those rusty skills. What fun
Except for the fact that Flying Scot's sail like barn doors, small
boat sailing is great

kts of wind sounds like perfect sailing condidtions - unless you are in a

Thanks for the kind words, Marc. As I pointed out, some of the problems were
"recent" such as the temp. mainsheet line and vang. As for leaving the dock,
the "fender" was our pivot point...but you knew that!
I have no excuse for the lack of winch handle holders, but I thought you
approved of my oversized sheets for ease of handling?
In any case, that was the heaviest air I've sailed the C&C is and was pleased
by how she did. Julia had the best nap ever.
Suzanne and I hope to pay you a visit next week!
