If you're a newbie, look up some sailing clubs in your area. Sign up
for a basic sailing course. You'll have plenty of opportunities to crew
for people. Being asked to crew is like being asked to go ballooning.
But instead of driving the chase car and paying for the gas, you'll be
the guy up forward doing all the work.

How do you go about crewing on someone's boat?

Join your local yacht club as an auxiliary member...it's cheaper than a
regular membership and is limited to the "boatless"...then find out when
they're teaching the JY 15 classes...start showing up on Wednesday nights
for the beer can races and offer to be "rail meat". Don't expect to do
anything the firs couple times out except maybe get yelled at and told to
move from side to side...watch and listen to everything that is being said
and done. Watch the kids sail their Butterflies. Better yet, go sail one
of the club's Butterflies. The more you're around, the more rides you'll
get, especially if you show some aptitude.

Go to the local club. Post a message. Turn up on race night and ask
around. A real sailor learns to be inventive for problem solving.

One of the more interesting experiences this summer. . . we were sailing
north in Little Egg Harbor, as a "swarm" of butterflies (30 boats?) was
reaching across the channel (heading east), back to their dock to end their
lesson. Each boat had a kid at the tiller, each kid had a "Holy Sh*t" look
on his/her face, as they seemed completely unsure of what to do next. Each
kid made the determination to do absolutely nothing, and to allow me to
figure out how to avoid colliding with any and all of them. Fortunately the
wind was kind enough to allow me to wind my way slowly and cautiously
through the array, giving me a chance to greet and speak (very briefly) with
many of the young sailors. It was one of the coolest experiences of the
season.

Coming to this group with a question like that, well you would do better
trying to teach the proverbial pig to sing, imho.
