Does anyone use or have used satellite hookups to get on the internet
when they are sailing, I'm trying to figure the costs and setup. The Idea of hooking
into a cell phone to gain access does not appeal to me due to the fact
that the cell phone company's can be a rip off.

Yup.... at least one marina here offered broad band hook-ups. My vessel is
moored 200 yds from my router and I can access it no problem.

The best deal now is Sprint - they have an unlimited data plan that's $10 extra, so you
can get a reasonable cell plan for $49 a month. Of course, Sprint coverage sometimes
leaves a lot to be desired, but if you're in their area, it works out.

I'm told that the advertised rate is 144kBaud, though in practice its somewhat less. It
is, however, much better than dialup. I have a friend that stayed online much of the time
while he wintered at anchor in the creeks around Georgetown, SC.

I have heard of satellite systems that let you hook up no matter where you
are
as long as you can pull some power, you can hookup. I was hoping somebody
has used these new systems and could tell me about it. Also this new system
would not require any cell phones ,, just a satellite.... and a wireless
modem -LAN
our router.
