SAIL LOCO June 30th 03 03:14 AM

Another Convert from the Dark Side....

I'm on a bay that exits onto the Atlantic and sail along an exposed rugged
shoreline. An Easter or Sou' Easter will put me to a lee shore with breaking
swells in a hurry.

Seems dangerous. I'd stay home. I only go out when the wind is from the south
at 12.68 - 15.39kts.

Danger is my middle name..... or was that Drunk is my middle name. Either
way this is my home sailing grounds and nothing spells satisfaction better
than surfing a rolling breaker over Deception Shoals, past the Gull Islands
and into the sudden quiet of Shag Bay.

We got knocked flat by a sudden evening gust last night. I was down below
pouring juices for the niece and nephew with Nuxlo at the helm... he was
trying to catch some wind during a dead zone as the breeze was shifting. I
warned him not to tighten the sheets and to hand the main sheet. I saw the
gust coming and sure enough he had the sails sheeted in flat. The tip of the
mast was about 5 feet from the water before Overproof spun, shrugged off the
slam and started to make awesome velocity to weather. I didn't spill the
juice! ;-D

I decided to head back because the kids wanted to fish and gybed to run back
to the bay.... proceeded to burn 3 of my fingers with the main sheet. OUCH!
The downwind run saw us at 8.2 knots. I don't have any idea what the
windspeed was..... very brisk.

I hear that Oz.... if you're gonna **** yourself on the way out anyway...
it may as well be smackin' a freighter [ with nobody on the bridge as usual]
rather than your depends at the old age home.
