It ain't from Marx, although I do understand that misquote in context.
Marx wrote that the real purpose of religion was to create a fantasy
world for the impoverished. The realities of life for the poor make it
extremely difficult for them to be comfortable, so religious belief
tells them they will find comfort and happiness in "the next life."
Religion sugarcoats or serves as an opiate for the poor.
I think that's what's going on in today's political arena. "Big Brother is benevolent toward you" "Big Brother will take care of you." "Big brother is owed your obedience."
We used to have a social compact in this country that included the idea
that if you worked hard for an employer, that employer would share its
financial gains with you. That compact for millions of American workers
is dead, thanks to greed on the part of those at the top.
