The Genie I have in my junk box looks pretty sturdy

It may look sturdy, but it won't pull a boat.

You are confusing what it can do and what the safety weenies will let
it do.

Besides, $250 for a garage door opener that you have to modify and it
still won't be powerful enough, or $250 for a winch that will do the
job. Go for it!

I was thinking more of a $20 one from a garage sale. I am not going to
start a ****ing match here but they are stronger than you would think.
I picked up my door with a broken spring by holding the switch closed.
By using a bigger sprocket at the driven end you are increasing the
mechanical advantage 8x or more.

Gearing is everything, of course. Mine wouldn't BEGIN to open my 16 foot
wooden door with one of the two torsion springs broke. I had to lift A
LOT of the load manually while my neighbor held the switch closed.

I agree you can get a cheap winch but how do you start and stop it
while being at the other end steering the boat?

With the cable switch, of course.

I also agree, just practice backing up with the truck. That is a skill
you can use anywhere.

YUP!
