Default boston water quality

I am new to paddling in the Boston area. In hot weather, I often roll
now and again just to cool off, but I don't know how bad the fresh water
is around here. Anyone know if it is safe to get dunked in the Concord,
Assabet, Sudbury, etc.? How I know the Charles is not clean. Also,
what about Boston Harbor?

Thanks

Dan

You're safer in salt water than fresh. The only fresh water I roll in
is Walden Pond (cleanest), Lake Cochituate (clean), and Mystic Lake
(somewhat clean). As the summer moves in the slow moving rivers get
too warm and become breeding grounds for too much algae and single
celled organisms. I regularly get fungal infections in my toes from
the rivers. If you're a competent roller hit the coastal waters, North
Shore or South Shore. I think Boston harbor would be my last choice to
roll in. Then again I'm picky!
