* 19th Century Engineering Marvel becomes Engineering Challenge of the
21st Century

Using laser survey data generated by Headland Archeology in Edinburgh,
Scotland, South Australian firms Aztec Analysis, Bown Drafting and
Custom Spatial Solutions used the millimetre accurate information in
the design of a 100 tonne steel transportation cradle.

The cradle is being used in the transportation of the clipper ship
'City of Adelaide' from Scotland to South Australia. It will protect
the composite wood and iron hull from deforming during the
transportation process.

The 1864 composite hull of the 'City of Adelaide' was built in the
years prior to Lloyds Register publishing their rules for composite
ship construction and thus is a very important example in the
development of composite ships.

A ceremony was recently held at the premises of engineering firm
Samaras, to mark start of construction of the cradle. Samaras are one
of over a dozen South Australian engineering firms donating their
services to construct the cradle from steel generously donated by
OneSteel.

The steel cradle will be shipped to Scotland in five shipping
containers organised by Customs Agency Services another South
Australian firm donating their expertise.

Sponsorship opportunities presently exist for persons or companies
interested in covering the shipping costs for any of the five
container shipments to Scotland. If you are interested, please
contact us at

* Fundraising Events

The next fundraising dinner for the 'City of Adelaide' will be held on
Friday 4th November 2011 at Adelaide Oval. Please be sure to make a
note of this in your diaries.

Our last dinner was a very successful and popular event with nearly
400 guests attending. The dinner was attended by our Patron, the
Governor of South Australia, Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce. Special Guest
Speaker was Sir James Hardy, with "Mister South Australia" Keith
Conlon as Master of Ceremonies. Special thanks to those who attended,
and those who donated and bought auction and raffle prizes.

Another special fundraising function was held in August. This was a
more intimate affair, with about 50 invited guests. Guests had the
opportunity to purchase "shares", in the maritime tradition of a ship
being sold in units of 1/64th. Each share has a value of $5,000.

Between the two functions, in excess of $100,000 has been raised.

* Sea-Miles Campaign

A new "Sea miles" campaign is about to get underway, enabling people
to contribute to a part of the ship's final journey from Scotland to
Adelaide.
The journey is being divided up in to sea-miles and sea-yards with
donors able to "purchase" a tranche of ocean and receive a certificate
in return to recognise their assistance in bringing the 'City of
Adelaide' back to South Australia. Details to follow soon.

Donations are essential to our ongoing work as we are a 100% volunteer
group. Donations are Tax Deductible.
