The first boat we chartered was WHISPER. The dinghy was SHOUT

There's a boat named BANDERSNATCH and the dinghy is WHITE RABBIT

DUNFLYIN belonging to a retired pilot.

DOLPHIN belonging to a retired submariner

The boat next to us in the marina here is TUFF BABY - made like an
Alaska fishing boat with aluminum topsides

Other boats seen on the ICW

Canadian boats LUNATIC FRINGE and LOONIE BIN

LORD'S PRAYER (which I assume must belong to a minister or something)

Houseboat named BOAT HOUSE

A shrimp boat towing a barge named STRUGGLER

Two sailing school boats named BEGINNER'S LUCK and STUDENT DRIVER

A sailboat named REAL QUIET which was a name I considered.

A LARGE power boat in Lake Worth named WHO CARES?

A small sailboat with no motor named A QUESTION OF BALANCE

OUR TERN with the T in the shape of a bird

Two that I thought were not particularly clever or funny were WET
DREAMS and SHIP FACED.

A large power boat named SWALLOW which I said looked more like a
bustard than a swallow.

There was a horse named EXPENSIVE TOY which I think might be a good
name for a boat.

I never did name it, other than in conversation, but I had a runabout which
was forever in some sort of mechanical distress. Despite repeated
experiences at our church's annual boat blessings (one year I only could
bring the seats!), it spent more time not being used than otherwise.

I called her Miss Fortune...

quite alone on a great, wide sea, it is apt to occur to you that in the
general scheme of things you are merely an insignificant speck on the
surface of the ocean; and are not nearly so important or as self-sufficient

that may effect a permanent change in your deportment that will be greatly

Heh. Well, I LOVE punny names...or at least hearing about them. But I
think a prime consideration has to be *not* "is it funny?" but "is it
confusing to the Coast Guard when you are trying to ID your sinking
vessel?"

Perhaps a spoilsport opinion, but if it takes three attempts to
understand "SV Why Knot", I would suggest that "dangerous" has trumped
"cute".

One of my husband's normal exclamations is "OK Whatever" (When he
retired, they gave him an "OK Whatever" plaque) We considered naming
the boat that, but I thought about calling the CG- CG asks, What is
the name of your vessel - A. OK Whatever. CG What is the nature of
your distress OK Whatever? etc.

I also thought about spelling out OK in words, but the word for K is
Kilo, and I thought that might lead to unfortunate conclusions.

However, I don't mind the puny names so much as those names with a
whole lot of vowels in them. We've met people on a boat named for the
blue crab and the name means beautiful swimmer or something like that,
and when they check in on the SSB with Herb, they call themselves
something that is easier to understand. I know of a Mainship with a
name like that in beautiful script on the stern, but they have a
dinghy over it name and say that no one can ever understand their name
so they call themselves "Mainship" on the radio as if that was the
boat's name.

We met some folks on a boat named ARCTURUS, which is a star, but he
said folks have a lot of trouble with the name on the radio. It must
get tiring to have to explain your boat's name all the time.

Now, that tells you something, as Arcturus, being one of the better
celestial navigational stars, would have been as familiar as "Polaris"
twenty years ago.

Anyway, your point about a lot of vowels is interesting. Under less
than ideal transmitting conditions, more vowels would equal less
meaning conveyed to a distant station. I wonder how the French,
Spanish and Italian Coast Guards handle the inherent "ah-ee-oo" sounds
on their radio communications at sea? I would guess they have to do a
lot more spelling out than people speaking Germanic languages.

I regularly intercept pretty weak 'n' crunchy TX from distant stations
while sailing, and I can usually follow the plot just from the way the
consonants are flowing.

There is a boat named "whatever" in my marina. When the wife found out the
name they originally picked out had been used, her husband told her on the
phone to name it whatever. She did.

Another funny one around here is "excuse me". Racing sailboat... funny to
hail him though. "Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me... this is Anastasia III".
Somebody invariably asks... "so what do you want?" hehehe!

As an Electrical Engineer, I always wanted to name a boat CMOS
(pronounced Sea Moss) for Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor, a
popular semiconductor technology. Most would agree, it is a bit too
obscure and would likely never get pronounced correctly -- save for the
occasional electronics enthusiast.

Oh my this *is* clever. Why do you then not name your boat "Sea
Moss" but superimpose that name over the letters "C M O S" on
the stern of the boat, or intertwine the letters C, M, O, & S
into the full name. With the help of a talented graphic artist,
you could arrive at a pleasing graphic to place on the boat.

Or just C MOSs which would be pronounceable although most people
probably still wouldn't get it. Using single letters KT for Katy is
fairly common (especially on license plates) and it isn't that hard a
concept. (that would be the Complimentary Metal Oxide SemiconductorS
- plural)

Where it is important that it be spelled CMOSs instead of Sea Moss
(which I don't think it would make much difference on the radio for
instance - so what if the bridge tender or marina person gets it
spelled wrong) you could spell it phonetically pretty easily. Most of
the time someone who's made that mistake will be too embarrassed to
say anything IME.

There are some regs that prohibit names that sound too much like commonly used
radio calls. Can you imagine the confusion

I've seen boats named that... but the above post made me think it would be funny
to name a boat "Repeat Your Last"

"Repeat Your Last, Repeat Your Last, Repeat Your Last, this is Vessel Calling."

"we copy, vessel calling Repeat Your Last, go ahead."

"No, I mean this is the vessel Vessel Calling."

"Repeat your last"

And so on. Not quite as good on "Who's on First" but it keep a few people
harmlessly amused.

There was a boat sailing out of Maine called "Say Again." It caused
considerable problems on the radio. Cute, but might be deadly in case
of an emergency.

Also knew of a lawyer's boat named "The Courthouse." His secretary

How about calling for a boat named UH OH II on the radio? Saw a power
boat with that name in the Alligator Pungo Canal.

TOTALLY WASTED is a name I'm not sure I like that I saw on another
power boat. I'm not sure about LAWMEN from Baltimore either. I liked
another trawler QUE PASA? better.

We met some newly retired folks whose boat was named GREAT ESCAPE.

How about calling for a boat named UH OH II on the radio? Saw a power
boat with that name in the Alligator Pungo Canal.

TOTALLY WASTED is a name I'm not sure I like that I saw on another

We once saw a boat called "Job Site". I could imagine the owner's
secretary telling people "He's out on the job site and can't be
reached."

I've always thought it would be fun to name a boat like:

Charleston Police Department
or
Federal Bureau of Investigation
or
Coast Guard Group Charleston
or
Drug Enforcement Administration
or
Internal Revenue Service
or
USS Eisenhower
or
Frying Pan Shoals Light
or
United Flight 232

creating real havoc on VHF wherever you sailed.....(c;

If I have to call the Coasties for some non-emergency reason like
reporting a floating container or other massive hazard dumped off some
ship, I call them with their OFFICIAL FCC CALLSIGN and mine, creating
more real havoc as the idiot on watch rarely recognizes his station by
his OFFICIAL FCC CALLSIGN. Not getting an answer, I switch to the CB
handles like "Coast Guard Group Charleston", which he answers to
immediately, so I can INFORM and TRAIN their watchstanders as to their
OFFICIAL FCC CALLSIGN when I ask him why he didn't respond when I
called him at first....(c; I still use our callsign, in any event.

Maybe we should put:

WDB 6254

on the stern of her, which seems to create its own havoc on VHF or:

366920680

her new MMSI for the DSC/GMDSS radios. That way if you wanted to call
me on HF or VHF, you could see our MMSI on the stern where "Lionheart"
used to be....(c;

Might be fun to have those made up into flags I could fly, proudly,
from the mainmast or have sewn into the new mainsail instead of the
hull number, which is useless. Great big WDB 6254, 8' high on the
main....

Of course, we COULD use Morse on 2182.....(c;
All in good fun, don'tcha know.

Rufus "L"

are two locally named boats.

Far Canal is another I have seen.

However sailing yesterday I heard a scratchy communication that sounded like
Pan Pan Pan

I listened again and sure enough there is was again. I answered, asking the
vessel making the call whether they were amking a distrass call.

Thye response was the vessel they were calling was Fern

Message was "Fern" "Fern" "Fern" and in the static sounded almost like Pan
Pan Pan....so I was wrong....no need to cancel my Coastguard membership.

Gave the Sunfish away to one of the dock crew at Ashley Marina last
fall. Nice kid, college student who just happen to be in the right
place at the right time. He helped me load up a free 9.4 Watertender
one of the guys on E-dock gave me when I suggested we pump her out
before it went under full of rainwater. Another yacht friend gave me
a 3hp Yamaha outboard for fixing the automatic yard light at his
house. He didn't need it any more, having sold his Hatteras 56 and
gotten out of boating and its headaches.

I gave away the Sunfish so I could put the "new powerboat" on the
little trailer the Sunfish was sitting on. Free boats with free
motors run a LOT smoother than something that will only depreciate,
you know!

I looking for some discouraged yachtie who wants to get rid of that
nasty Beneteau with the leaky diesel, now.....(c;

This does remind me of a boyhood friend of mine, who once stopped
to help an old lady who had a flat tire, during a rain storm. She
wanted to pay him for changing her tire, but he told her that
helping her gave him a good feeling that wasn't for sale, and if
she really wanted to do him a favor, she could help some one else
out when she saw some one who needed help.

If more people did that kind of thing, Larry, and required them
to pass along the favor or the help the world would be a much
happier place in which to live.

I salute you, sir.
