That takes me back almost twenty years... I doubt the park has changed much
since then, though. As far as I can remember (and looking at a park map),
there's just an old river channel with little or no current that runs
through the park. The whole park is only something like 6-7 km long, so
you're not looking at trips of any length--it's more just a way to spend a
couple hours with the kids.

besides lake huron, the only part you can canoe on in The Pinery is the old
ausable river. it used to be a river but now it's really one large long pond
with very minimal movement. it's very peaceful, you can canoe pretty much
the length of the park (with one road to lift over which is where the
rentals are)
so it's not moving too fast and there are lots of lovely lily pads, turtles,
reeds, deadheads, wildlife and car campers renting paddleboats and these
strange things that are like bicycles on floats. almost no skills required
besides balance and steering skills!
near the rental place there are lots of people (it's located in one of the
main parts of the park) but if you canoe for 20 min or so north you will be
rid of most car campers OR if you take your boat over the bridge and go
south (actually im not sure if they'll let you take THEIR boats over the
bridge, i've always had my own but they should) there are less people over
there because that takes more effort ;-)
(and if you like interesting guided walks there was one that took place at
night on the riverside trail where they showed you many cool night creatures
and glowing plants etc.)

any other questions, ask...
