You deserve a good paddling!
Enjoy the natural beauty and pristine wilderness of Atikokan, Ontario,
located just outside world-renowned Quetico Provincial Park, as we
celebrate Canoefest 2003.
Have you ever seen hundreds of people in canoes and kayaks holding
hands? It is quite a sight and moves some canoe aficionados to tears!
Each year the community of Atikokan hosts this event aptly named the
Raft-Up! It is an event worth travelling miles and miles to see and
participate in.
Atikokan's Raft-Up! was inspired by Cleveland Ohio's successful bid to
break the Guinness Book of World record for having the most
canoes/kayaks on a single water body at one time. In 2002 this tiny
community of 3500 took its first stab at breaking Cleveland's record
(pop. 500 000) of 777 canoes/kayaks. Despite being 498 crafts shy of
Cleveland's record, the event gave birth to Atikokan's annual summer
festival - Canoefest.
Started in 2002 as a way to promote Atikokan as the Canoeing Capital
of Canada, Canoefest is now a 5-day festival of canoeing, kayaking and
many other entertaining events.
"Try, try again" and "Never give up!" have become CanoeFest's mottos.
With each passing year the number of CanoeFest activities and events
grow, as do the number of Raft-Up participants! Within the span of one
year, the festival has grown from three to five days in length. At
this rate of growth CanoeFest will soon have as many events as there
are boats participating in the Raft-UP!
Despite its name, CanoeFest offers a range of events and activities
that appeal to people of all ages and canoeing abilities. Old
favourites like the Cherry Pit Spitting Contest, Teddy Bear Picnic,
Fish Fry, and Canoe Races are back again this year. New events include
the Voyageur Triathalon Race, where participants paddle, portage, and
prepare bannock, the Outdoor Sports Show, and Driftwood Competition.
But CanoeFest isn't all about racing and eating. In addition to
bringing along your paddle and appetite, you mustn't forget your
dancing shoes! Canoefest provides you with ample opportunity to let
loose and show us your dance moves at the beach party, evening of
karaoke, and CanoeFest dance.
You won't want to miss any of these exciting events. Visitors from as
far away as Australia, Germany, the British Isles and the United
States join us each year. We hope you will too! Portage your canoe to
the Canoeing Capital of Canada July 16 to 20, 2003 for a festival
unlike any other you've experienced before!
Bring your entire family and take part in the wide variety of races,
games and events involving canoeing, kayaking and all things outdoors.
